How to watch the 2017 IPL Live Online

Published by on April 5, 2017 in VPN & Privacy

The international T20 circuit has expanded significantly in recent years with the Pakistan Super League, Bangladesh Premier League, Big Bash League, and even the Caribbean Premier League clamoring for audiences, advertisers, and big-name stars.

But the undoubted holy grail of T20 competitions is the Indian Premier League (IPL). It’s the richest, snazziest, and the most ostentatious affair.

IPL 2017 starts on the April 5th and stretches for 47 days featuring a total of 60 matches. The full schedule can be viewed at the bottom of this article.

The global appeal of the IPL means cricket fans across the world are hungry to tune in.

If you’re residing in India, accessing the cricketing extravaganza won’t be a problem. There’s services like Hotstar and StarSports that’ll allow free livestreaming for IP addresses within India.

Unfortunately these sites are restricted for the majority of Western audiences. If you try to access either Hotstar or StarSports from outside of India, you’ll be greeted with a screen that looks similar to this:

Hotstar content not available

Yes, there’s the option of splurging on premium subscriptions, such as Sky TV, Willow TV, or even Cricketgateway. Willow TV starts at US$7.99/month at the time of writing and is available for users within North America only. Cricketgateway currently has a discounted offer for an IPL subscription and offers full HD access for US$24.99. Sky is the most expensive out of the lot, with monthly plans starting at US$27.

It’s clear broadcasters want maximum revenues – hence the array of paid packages and plans – but there are workarounds for the smart, discerning user.

How to watch the IPL for free with a VPN

The easiest solution is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Don’t be intimidated by the obscurantist name – all a VPN does is mask your true location and encrypt internet traffic – thereby unlocking content previously unavailable.

A VPN has negligible impact on your existing internet speed and system performance. It’s simply a piece of software that prevents host websites from determining where you actually are in the world, and prevents anyone on your local or ISP network from spying on your activity. It works by encrypting all the internet traffic to and from your device, then routing it through an intermediary server. VPNs are 100 percent legal in most places, so you’re not breaking any laws so long as you don’t break any copyright restrictions.

Therefore, a subscriber in the UK, Australia or anywhere else could use VPN software to watch an unlimited amount of IPL for free. This will only work with a VPN  with fast enough speeds for streaming and with servers in India. ExpressVPN is our recommendation and is one of the fastest VPNs which has servers in India.  You can try it risk free as they offer a no quibbles 30 day money-back guarantee. If you just want to watch a few games and cancel your subscription for a full refund you can do so. You can get an extra 3 months free with the annual plan here, the money back guarantee still applies so this is still a risk free way to try the service and will bring the cost down if you want to keep it after the 30 day period.

Step-by-step guide to watching IPL with a VPN

Log on to the VPN site, sign up for one of their monthly plans, and download the software for your particular operating system.

ExpressVPN deals

Once that’s done, install it and choose a server in India.

The screenshots above were taken on a Macbook Air, but the process is very similar for Windows PCs. There will be no difference in performance either, so whatever your machine is, the VPN should work like a charm.

Once that’s done, just clear your cookies, refresh your browser, and you’re good to go!

When you log on to Hotstar with your VPN connected, the host website will think you’re a user in India. It’ll make all the local content available for your viewing pleasure.

The best part is that a VPN secures the entire gamut of your internet traffic, and not only when you’re watching the IPL. That’s important because whatever you do online is now encrypted, away from the reach of any prying eyes. If you care about privacy and are uncomfortable with the thought that the NSA might be keeping tabs on your browsing history, a VPN is a solid bet to give you peace of mind.

If you’re looking to stream the IPL on your Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Playstation, we recommend setting up a VPN on a PC virtual router.

This is possible because most PCs that can connect to wifi are also capable of broadcasting a wifi signal for other devices to connect to.

In this article to find a full tutorial on how to set up a VPN on a virtual router – both for Windows and Mac devices.

Watching IPL with a Smart DNS

This is a more complex method and not our recommend option but if you don’t want to use a VPN, there’s also the option of a DNS proxy. This works similar to a VPN, minus the encryption, which means it’s slightly faster.  However, there won’t be multiple options of server locations like there are in a VPN. If you do want to use a Smart DNS service choose a reputable one such as Overplay.

Overplay also has a much wider selection of locations as compared to other DNS options. Once that’s set up, use these instructions to access IPL on a Windows 10 or Windows 7 PC:

  1. Right click the network icon in your system tray and click “Open network and sharing center.”
  2. Click the link next to “Connections” for whatever network you use to access the internet, be it wifi or LAN.
  3. Click Properties
  4. Uncheck Internet Protocol version 6
  5. Highlight Internet Protocol version 4 and click Properties
  6. Check the bullet that says “Use the following DNS server addresses”. Input the server addresses you chose from the Overplay server list.
  7. Check “Validate settings upon exit”
  8. Reboot your computer.

On Mac OSX, the process is similar

  1. You can find the DNS settings by clicking the Apple icon and going to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS.
  2. Hit the “+” button and add the DNS addresses provided by Overplay
  3. Click “Okay”, then “Apply”
  4. Reboot your Mac

Setting up DNS on Android will vary depend on what version you are using, but here’s the gist:

  1. Find the list of wifi networks available and long-press whichever one you’re connected to. This should bring up an option to either forget or modify the network. Choose the latter.
  2. Check “Advanced options” if it isn’t already selected. Under “IP settings”, select “Static” from the dropdown.
  3. Scroll down to the fields for DNS and enter the server addresses provided by Overplay.
  4. Restart your device.

Now for iOS:

  1. Open Settings > Wifi
  2. Click the “i” icon for your network
  3. Tap the DNS box and replace whatever is there with the server addresses provided by Overplay.
  4. Restart your iPhone or iPad.

Free, but shady, options

Users may find there’s a bunch of options when it comes to generic searches on free IPL streams. We don’t recommend such livestreams simply because they’re full of nasty things like malware, spyware, and annoying popup advertisements. They also operate in a legal gray area and their sole purpose is to drive traffic towards affiliate sites.

Finding such streams isn’t hard – a bit of digging on Reddit and Google will do the trick – but they’re unreliable, clunky, and almost certainly of an inferior quality. Excessive use of these ‘free’ livestreams will result in things like viruses and reduced system performance. Users may think they’re getting away by paying nothing but the long-term impact is pretty clear.
