Live stream the Chinese Grand Prix online for free with Kodi or a VPN

Published by on April 6, 2017 in VPN & Privacy

The second Grand Prix of the 2017 Formula 1 season is just around the corner. All eyes will be locked on to the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday, April 9, 2017 for the Chinese Grand Prix.

In Short

There are a number of ways to watch the Chinese Grand Prix online. You can stream the race online in HD for free on TenPlay from Network 10 with a VPN. Normally this channel will only work if you are located in Australia, as you need to have an Australian IP address.

A VPN will spoof your location so it looks like you are in Australia. It’s a quick and easy but very effective workaround with the right VPN. You need a fast VPN for quality streaming that also has Australian servers.

We recommend ExpressVPN, which meets these criteria and has a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can try it risk free and then cancel after the race for a full refund if you don’t want to keep it.

Use this offer to get three months extra free, in case you do decide to keep it for watching future Grand Prix races and other sporting events not broadcast in your location. You can still cancel within 30 days and receive a full refund if you don’t want to keep it; there’s no risk attached.

In detail and all options

Cable subscribers in Australia can watch the race on Channel 10 or Fox or free on Network Ten.

If you’re in the UK and have a cable subscription that includes Sky Sports F1, then the Chinese Grand Prix can be live streamed on the Sky Sports website or Sky Go app. If you have such a cable subscription but are outside of the UK, then check out our tutorial for watching Sky Go abroad using a VPN or smart DNS.

Viewers in Canada can catch the race on TSN 3 or RDS 2 with a cable subscription. Online streaming via TSN 3 or RDS 2 is also possible but requires a subscription.

Viewers in the U.S. can watch the Grand Prix via the NBC Sports Network or online through the NBC Sports website. Please note that this will require a subscription.

We will also explain how you can watch the Chinese Grand Prix with Kodi free of charge with a VPN by streaming a free Australian TV channel.

Race Schedule

Qualifying takes place on Saturday, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. and the Chinese Grand Prix starts on Sunday, March 26 at 2:00 p.m. All times are UTC +8 (Shanghai).

Below we’ve listed the broadcasters for Australia, the UK, Canada, and the US and their respective live streaming options. If you want to watch in a web browser, the best option looks to be tenplay from Australia. The race is a “free to air” event so no subscription is necessary. You will need an Australian IP address to view it, so be sure to connect with a VPN to a server in Australia.

How to watch the Chinese Grand Prix live using Kodi

If you have Kodi, which is available for a wide array of devices such as Windows, Mac and Android devices, or you are thinking of downloading it, then this guide is for you.

You have a few options for watching the race, so let’s get started.

We’ll show you how to do this using four add-ons: UK Turk Playlists (Metalkettles repo), Phoenix (Fusion repo), SportsDevil (Fusion repo), and Adrian Sports (Adrian Sports repo).

Note that the ultimate aim with each option is to access a sanctioned stream of the Chinese Grand Prix in order to watch the race, many streams are unsanctioned and connecting to these is at best a legal gray area and not condoned.

It’s worth noting the many people access the popular sports channel Sky Sports F1 however this is often unsanctioned, copyrighted content and could result in a your ISP throttling your connection or sending a warning letter, particularly if you are not keeping your online activity private with a VPN

Expert Tip: Streams are often removed or are overwhelmed with traffic, so preparing multiple add-ons is a good idea for Kodi users. Copyright restrictions differ by country. Be sure to check the relevant laws in your area so you do not end up on the wrong side of the law. Most Kodi users subscribe to a VPN to protect their privacy and remain anonymous. A favorite VPN of ours and the Kodi community’s is IPVanish, which offers high speeds and a great level of privacy protection. IPVanish works with all Kodi add-ons and the annual plan is available to our readers  with a huge 57% discount. We’ll revisit VPNs in more detail later in this article.

Use A VPN When Watching The Chinese Grand Prix

VPNs encrypt your internet traffic and reroute it to a server in a location of your choice. This type of stream from Live Mix may not be sanctioned by your internet service provider. If this is the case, it may try to throttle your connection when you use a service such as Kodi or try to disable your access to such a service altogether.

In order to prevent this, use of a VPN is recommended when using Kodi and thus by extension when you are watching the Chinese Grand Prix. Note that VPNs allow to access geo-restricted content and they also protect your online privacy.

A live stream requires a large amount of bandwidth, so a reliable VPN provider is needed when accessing such a stream. We recommend IPVanish, which reliably provides the necessary sturdy connection and plentiful capacity needed for live streaming.

We can confirm that IPVanish works with all Kodi Addons we’ve tested, you can save 57% here on the annual plan.

Comparitech does not condone or encourage any violation of copyright restrictions. Please consider the law, victims, and risks of piracy before downloading or streaming copyrighted material without permission.
