Security Plays a Big Role for Microsoft & Its Partners at Ignite

ATLANTA — Microsoft isn’t the only company making news this week at the Ignite conference here. 

While Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella waxed poetically about using artificial intelligence to create a better society and his executive vice presidents shared insights and updates on a host of new products, dozens of companies in the Microsoft universe capitalized on the opportunity to share what they are doing, too.

Between Microsoft, its partners and related vendors, the news spans every conceivable area of technology you can think of, with a particular emphasis this year on security.

Windows Server 2016

Microsoft put a serious security spin on its news this year, especially regarding Windows Server 16.

In a blog post, Erin Chapple, General Manager of the Windows Server business, noted the new platform comes with features to control privileged access, protect virtual machines and protect against emerging threats.

The security upgrades are specifically designed to protect virtual machines, which are vulnerable because they don’t have the same hardware-based security features as those in physical servers.

AppSense’s Virtual Protection

Virtualization is also a core element of Sunnyvale, Calif.- based AppSense‘s Ignite release. It released a number of new of solutions to provide IT with better management options for not just Windows Server 16, but also for the Windows 10 operating system.

AppSense DataNow 4.1 provides management of core enterprise applications and platforms like Office 365, Office 2016 and OneDrive for Business.

According to a statement from the company, the new release will make migrating to Windows 10 less frightening, was well as offer file and data access from anywhere.

Metalogix’s Collaboration Focus

Washington, D.C-based Metalogix built on its longstanding security focus with a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering called Content.ly. It provides enterprise workers who are trying to sync and share data a way of monitoring and controlling content across Office 365, Slack, Salesforce, Box, Dropbox and Google for Work.

Content.ly is a new approach to the problem and offers to manage dispersed collaboration, storage and file synchronization platforms used in different enterprise processes. 

It also tackles the serious issue of shadow IT, which refers to applications and solutions built and used inside organizations without explicit organizational approval.

Content.ly provides a comprehensive set of cloud apps to manage the lifecycle of content stored and shared across these platforms.  It’s now available for early adopters.

AvePoint’s Data Loss Upgrades

AvePoint is at Ignite this year with the latest version of its AvePoint Compliance Guardian suite.

This version offers native Office 365 Data Loss Prevention (DLP) functionality and multiple APIs that improve the ability to detect data-related security issues across Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive for Business and Yammer.

It also discovers and classifies sensitive data, provides comprehensive auditing and reporting features and enforces data governance policies.

Smartsheet With Skype

Bellevue, Wash.-based, Smartsheet, provider of a SaaS-based collaborative work management platform, just unveiled a new integration with Skype for Business.

This new integration enables users to see and communicate with Skype contacts directly from Smartsheet.

The Smartsheet app already enables users to assign tasks, track project progress, manage calendars, share documents and manage other work through a spreadsheet-like interface. The new integration will be available in December.

KnowledgeLake’s Improved Imaging

Saint Louis, Mo.-based KnowledgeLake, which specializes in SharePoint document imaging, revealed a new browser driven document imaging and processing platform that gives users direct content to multiple destinations across the enterprise.

The new KnowledgeLake Capture Server Professional can connect to various document repositories and business systems and scale up or down according to need.

It connects to SharePoint, SharePoint Online and One Drive for Business, as well as Hyland OnBase and other enterprise content management (ECM), enterprise resource planning (ERP) and accounting systems.
